        • Introduction
          Transportation, especially road transportation is one the most substantial factors in economic growth and development of a country which affects all sectors. Transportation industry significant role in the growth and prosperity of the country makes the particular attention of authorities and decision makers in the planning and decision making focused on transportation sector. Proper planning in order to optimize the use of available possibilities and resources and improving quality and quantity of safe land transportation is achievable just by having accurate and timely information and data.
          Typical difficulties and shortcomings alongside the roads in cold regions and especially in winters in Iran, has become a severe problem, causing horrible road accidents over the Country. Precise investigation of tragic driving accidents in road axes of the Country shows the significant proportion of effectiveness of climatic factors in these accidents. Studying the results gained from statistics of road accidents indicates of: 0.6% of accidents during storm conditions, 5.7% in terms of fog and low visibility, 43.8% occur in rainfall and pathways surface slippery conditions which accounted for the highest percentage of accidents. Moreover, 11.54% of the accidents occurred due to the road surface freezing.
          Having various car accidents on the roads due to severe weather conditions which are considered as economic vessels of a country, made IRIMO and Road Transportation and Maintenance Organization, by studying possibilities, to establish 58 road meteorology stations at phase one, in order to survey weather conditions in roads and road surface in point of freezing, snow height and ground conditions along the roads and dangerous mountain paths that increased the number of stations, including previously installed ones, up to 70 stations all over the Country.
          The main purpose of this joint project is to receive data and information from this network and become aware of the weather conditions along the roads and highways and especially mountain paths in order to issue severe weather conditions forecasts for communicational roads and to identify and eliminate their risky and disaster-prone locations.
